What is a container format in video?
A container format is the file-level wrapper that organizes one or more media streams and their metadata. Common video containers include MP4, QuickTime MOV, MXF, WebM, and MKV; the container is distinct from the codec used to compress each stream.
A container determines how streams are packaged, timed, identified, and sometimes which combinations are broadly supported. It can hold video, multiple audio languages, captions, chapters, timecode, and metadata. The filename extension often signals the container, but it does not fully reveal the codecs inside.
Compatibility requires considering the complete combination. A platform may accept an MP4 container but reject a particular codec, profile, audio codec, subtitle format, or metadata arrangement inside it. Export presets are useful because they choose a tested combination for a target rather than relying on the extension alone.

An editor delivers an MP4 file containing H.264 video, AAC audio, and embedded metadata. Another master is a MOV file containing ProRes video and several discrete audio tracks.
