What is dynamic range in video?
Dynamic range is the span between the darkest usable shadow detail and brightest usable highlight detail a camera can capture, or a display can show, usually described in stops.
A high-dynamic-range camera can record more information in a scene with bright windows and dark interiors before highlights clip or shadows disappear into noise. Camera latitude, recording profile, exposure, and the final display all influence how much of that range is useful in practice.
Scene contrast can exceed any camera’s capacity. Crews then shape the scene with lights, diffusion, negative fill, flags, and exposure choices, while colorists map captured values into the delivery format. HDR delivery can reproduce a wider display range than SDR, but it still requires deliberate mastering.
