What is a gimbal shot in video?
A gimbal shot uses an electronically stabilized, motorized support to isolate the camera from much of an operator’s motion. It enables smooth moving shots with relatively portable equipment.
Gimbals can follow performers through spaces where dolly track is impractical, and they are common for walk-throughs, vehicle-adjacent work, and quick setup moves. Their motors maintain orientation but do not replace deliberate operating or blocking.
A gimbal has a polished floating quality that differs from Steadicam or handheld work. Operators balance the camera, plan turns and acceleration, and watch for horizon drift, focus limits, and unwanted robotic motion.
