What is a keyframe in video editing?
A keyframe is a marker at a particular time that records a value for an editable property, such as position, scale, opacity, rotation, effect amount, or audio volume. With two or more keyframes, the software calculates the intermediate values to create animation over time.
For example, a title can start off-screen at one keyframe and sit centered at a later keyframe. The keyframes state where the title is at those moments; interpolation determines how it travels between them. Linear interpolation moves at a steady rate, while ease-in and ease-out curves create acceleration and deceleration that often feel more natural.
Keyframes are also useful for corrections that must change within a shot. An editor might animate a mask around a moving face, lower music under a line of dialogue, or gradually adjust exposure while a camera moves from a dark room into daylight. Clear, economical keyframing is easier to revise than adding unnecessary points to every frame.
