What is lens distortion?
Lens distortion is an optical aberration that changes the apparent geometry of an image, commonly making straight lines bow outward, bow inward, or stretch near the edges.
Barrel distortion curves lines outward, while pincushion distortion curves them inward. Very wide lenses may also stretch faces and objects near the frame edge because of perspective and projection, a related effect that is not always corrected by a simple distortion control.
Distortion can be corrected with lens profiles in an editing or color application, particularly for architecture, graphics, and visual effects. It can also be used intentionally: a slight wide-angle exaggeration can make a cramped room feel energetic or place an object aggressively close to the viewer.

Before adding screen-replacement graphics to a wide interior shot, the VFX artist applies the camera’s lens-distortion profile so the inserted lines follow the same geometry as the plate.
