What is video resolution?

Video resolution is the number of pixels used to make each frame, expressed as width by height, such as 1920 × 1080. More pixels can preserve more spatial detail, but resolution alone does not determine perceived image quality.

A 4K frame has more pixels than a 1080p frame, which can benefit large displays, reframing, and detailed imagery. However, codec efficiency, bitrate, lens quality, focus, noise, color sampling, and viewing distance also determine whether that extra resolution is visible or useful.

Editors choose sequence and export resolution for the required delivery, then scale or reframe source media as needed. Upscaling cannot restore detail that was never captured, while downscaling can improve perceived cleanliness and reduce the bitrate needed for distribution.

A 3840 × 2160 interview is edited in a 1920 × 1080 sequence. The extra source resolution lets the editor make a modest crop for a second angle while delivering a clean 1080p master.

Resolution affects framing options, storage, performance, and delivery quality. Choosing it intentionally avoids oversized files, soft upscales, and platform mismatches.

Frequently asked questions about Resolution

Is 4K always better than 1080p?

Not automatically. 4K offers more pixels, but a well-shot and well-encoded 1080p video can look better than poorly captured or heavily compressed 4K.

Is resolution the same as aspect ratio?

No. Resolution is pixel dimensions; aspect ratio is the proportional shape of those dimensions. Both 1920 × 1080 and 3840 × 2160 are 16:9.

Can I export a higher resolution than my source?

You can upscale it, but the export does not gain genuine source detail and may increase file size without a visible benefit.
