What is rolling shutter?
Rolling shutter is a method of reading a digital image sensor line by line rather than capturing every pixel at precisely the same instant. Fast movement or flashes can therefore appear skewed, stretched, or partially exposed.
A quick pan can make vertical buildings lean, a spinning propeller can bend, and a still photograph flash can illuminate only part of a video frame. The severity depends on the sensor’s readout speed, frame rate, crop mode, camera movement, and subject speed.
Some cameras use global shutters, which capture the frame at one instant and avoid these timing distortions. With rolling-shutter cameras, crews can minimize artifacts by avoiding abrupt pans, stabilizing vibration, choosing modes with faster readout, and planning VFX tracking with the camera’s behavior in mind.
