What is an anamorphic lens?
An anamorphic lens compresses a wider horizontal field of view onto the camera sensor. The recorded image is desqueezed in monitoring or post-production to its intended widescreen proportion.
Unlike simply cropping a spherical image, an anamorphic lens changes the optical rendering. Depending on the lens, it can produce oval out-of-focus highlights, horizontal flare streaks, and a characteristic balance of field of view and depth of field.
Anamorphic production needs planning. The crew must monitor a correctly desqueezed image, choose a compatible sensor mode and aspect ratio, and allow for the lens’s close-focus, weight, flare, and edge-performance behavior. These qualities can be desirable, but they are not automatic proof of a cinematic image.
