What is digital noise in video?
Digital noise is unwanted random or patterned variation in brightness or color within a digital image. It is commonly visible in underexposed shadows, high-ISO footage, and heavily processed or compressed material.
Noise can be fine monochrome speckle, colored chroma blotches, fixed-pattern texture, or temporal flicker. Its amount is affected by sensor design, temperature, ISO mode, exposure, codec, and the degree to which shadows are lifted during color grading.
The most reliable solution is usually a clean exposure with adequate light and the camera’s appropriate recording settings. Noise reduction can improve a shot, but aggressive treatment may smear skin, soften detail, or create temporal artifacts. Good post work balances cleanup against preserving natural texture.
