What is film grain?
Film grain is the fine, moving texture produced by light-sensitive particles in photographic film. In digital video finishing, the term also describes an added grain effect designed to emulate or stylize that texture.
The grain pattern of photochemical film varies with stock, exposure, development, and enlargement. It is not static dirt laid over an image; its organic variation is part of the film image. Different stocks and formats can yield very different grain size and color behavior.
Digital grain overlays can reduce the sterile appearance of clean digital footage, help composites sit together, or create a period feeling. It should be applied at a sensible stage in the finishing pipeline and assessed at the final delivery compression, where fine grain can increase bitrate demands or turn into unpleasant artifacts.
