What is the exposure triangle in video?

The exposure triangle is a teaching model for the linked choices of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Each affects recorded brightness, while each also changes a different visual property of the image.

Aperture affects depth of field, shutter speed affects motion blur, and ISO affects camera sensitivity behavior and noise. If one setting changes, another setting, the light level, or an ND filter may need to compensate to maintain the same exposure.

For video, the triangle is not a rule that all three controls should move freely during a shot. A chosen shutter is often held for continuity, a chosen aperture may serve the desired focus separation, and ISO may be selected for the camera’s best performance. Lighting and ND then become essential fourth practical tools.

To keep a daylight portrait at f/2.8 and a 180-degree shutter, the crew places an ND filter in front of the lens rather than increasing shutter speed and changing the motion blur.

The model makes trade-offs visible: a brighter image is never merely brighter when the change also alters blur, focus, noise, or highlight latitude.
