What is lens compression?
Lens compression is the common name for the visual effect in which distant background elements appear larger and closer to a subject when the camera is moved farther away and a longer focal length is used to keep the same framing.
The effect is fundamentally perspective, which is determined by camera position. A long lens narrows the field of view, so an operator usually moves back to preserve the subject’s size; from that farther viewpoint, differences in distance between near and far objects appear reduced.
Calling it compression is useful shorthand during a shoot, but it can cause confusion. Zooming from one fixed camera position changes framing but does not create the same relationship between subject and background. To reshape the image, change distance first, then select a focal length that restores the intended composition.
