What is masking in video editing?
Masking in video editing uses a defined area, path, or matte to limit visibility or isolate part of a layer. A mask can hide pixels, reveal another layer beneath, or restrict a color correction, blur, or other effect to one region.
A simple static mask can blur a logo, crop an unwanted object, or create a text reveal. When the subject moves, the mask path can be keyframed or attached to motion-tracking data so it follows the target. Feathering softens the mask edge; expansion changes its size; inversion swaps the visible and hidden areas.
Masking is not limited to removal. Editors use it creatively for split screens, selective color changes, transitions, and compositing. The important choice is whether a simple geometric mask is sufficient or whether irregular motion, hair, or changing edges require a more detailed roto matte.
