What is rotoscoping?
Rotoscoping, often shortened to roto, is the process of tracing or painting around an element in moving footage to create an animated mask or matte. It lets an editor isolate the subject so it can be adjusted, removed, or combined with another image.
Roto is used when a clean color key is not possible: for example, when a person was not filmed against a screen or when a background is visually complex. A traditional workflow shapes a path around the subject at key frames and refines it as the subject moves; modern roto tools can propagate an initial selection but still require review and corrections.
Edges are the difficult part. Hair, motion blur, transparent materials, and changing light demand careful matte refinement, feathering, and sometimes separate passes. Good roto follows the object’s real movement without producing chatter or a visible cutout edge.
