What is shutter angle in video?

Shutter angle expresses exposure duration as a portion of each frame interval, using the geometry of a rotating shutter as a reference. At any frame rate, 180 degrees exposes for half of the frame interval.

At 24 fps, a 180-degree shutter is about 1/48 second; at 60 fps, it is about 1/120 second. That relationship makes shutter angle convenient when changing frame rate, because a 180-degree setting preserves the same proportion of motion blur without calculating a new speed.

Smaller angles mean shorter exposures and crisper, more staccato motion. Larger angles mean longer exposures, more blur, and more light, within the camera’s physical or electronic limits. The setting is conceptually based on film cameras but is common on digital cinema cameras too.

A scene switches from 24 fps to 48 fps for slow motion. Keeping a 180-degree shutter automatically changes the exposure time from roughly 1/48 to 1/96 second.
