What is log footage?

Log footage is video recorded with a logarithmic transfer curve that maps a camera’s wide tonal range into a comparatively flat-looking image intended for color correction and grading.

The muted contrast and saturation of a log image are not a mistake. The encoding preserves more code values for useful tonal information than a display-ready look, but it must be viewed and transformed with the correct camera and color-management workflow.

Log is not a guarantee of high dynamic range, raw recording, or a better image. The sensor, bit depth, codec, exposure, and transform all matter. Camera-specific exposure tools and monitoring LUTs help crews expose for the actual log profile while allowing the director to judge an approximate final appearance.

A camera records Log C footage while the monitor applies a viewing transform, letting the crew see a normalized contrast image without baking that transform into the recorded file.

Log footage can preserve grading latitude, but only when the edit and color pipeline correctly manage profiles, transforms, exposure, and delivery color space.
